Get in-depth knowledge and experience electro-etching metal using simple equipment that can easily and safely be set up and used in your home studio. The advantages of electro-etching include: no caustic or highly dangerous chemicals are used, no dangerous gasses or fumes are created during the process, the etching is repeatable when conditions are held constant, and several of the common electrolyte solutions do not become exhausted and do not need to be refreshed.
The technique and information learned in the class may be used to electro-etch copper, brass, bronze, nickel silver, aluminum, and silver, depending on the electrolyte. We will be using 1.5 volt batteries and 5 volt power supplies. We will be using salt, copper sulfate, and cupric nitrate as electrolytes, and using a variety of resists including vinyl, PnP, toner transfer paper, paint pens, nail polish, etc.
Students are encouraged to browse clip art resources available on the web for simple designs and to bring them to class. It is recommended, but not required, that students bring a laptop computer to the class. The instructor will also have a variety of designs available to choose from. Students will also be able to use a hydraulic press for forming bracelets, pendants, and earrings.
The $150.00 supply fee for the class does not include any metal, but does include all of other materials used in the class. Students are encouraged to bring their own metal for etching. Limited quantities of copper sheet and shapes will be available for purchase from the instructor. 20 gauge metal is recommended for bracelets and pendants and 24 gauge metal for earrings.
